Venice!

Isn't this lovely?

After all the driving yesterday and dire warnings from the travel guides not to go anywhere near Venice with a car, we took the train from Verona to Venice -- 1 hour 20 min. and 13 Euro one way per person.  In fact, the cars seemed to be moving along just fine on the causeway, but I'm still glad we went by train.

This is what you see when you exit the train station. We started off by walking.  Here is the beautiful wooden taxi as well as the garbage truck.

We then came upon this statue of Paolo Sarpi who was a friend of Galileo.  Check out galileo.rice.edu/gal/sarpi
We took a simple gondola to cross the canal but as you can see, they can get very elaborate.

We were enticed into a free boat ride across to the Isle of Murano where they make the Murano glass. Here is a glass blower displaying his talents.  We got a heavy-duty hard sell afterwards but, given the 14,000 euro price tag of some of the objets d'art, we left healthy tips and excused ourselves for lunch.

We leave you today with a nice picture of Richard.

  1. Beautiful photos!
I'm hoping you didn't get affected by the big earth quake, but it seems like it's mainly central Italy. Keep to the north!
